Cartoons, cartoons, cartoons.... John Crowther's Cartoon Odyssey

I think of it as The Fool's Journey. I've been asked who the "fool" is. It's me, but in the classical sense of the court jester. Only the fool was allowed to tell the king of his follies. All cartoons are available as prints or originals, framed or unframed, through my website or e-mail. Out of This World

When I was a kid I didn't much like to read. I far preferred looking at pictures. One of my favorite books was "Conquest of Space," by Willy Ley. The illustrations were by Chesley Bonestall, and they were breathtaking. I spent hours and hours gazing at the landscapes on alien planets, and travelling among distant galaxies. It's astonishing how accurate so many of the meticulously researched and detailed paintings were, judging from images sent back by wandering spacecraft. Ley described with astonishing prescience today's space program, and Bonestall's paintings imagined men floating high above the earth in pictures eerily similar to the photos we've become familiar with. For a while I wanted to be Chesley Bonestall when I grew up. Fate and a lack of his work ethic (not to mention talent) took me in other directions. This is as close as I can come. I can take comfort in the fact that Ley and Bonestall weren't especially funny. But then, hey, there are those who'd say I'm not either.

Love this one, John C. Never had the pleasure of reading Bonestall or Ley. Think I lived a deprived childhood compared to yours, says she with awe in voice. As you continue these cartoons, somehow, they seem to draw one more and more into them so that I am becoming an addict. May have to go into rehab like Miss USA, says she with a grimace.

That's the whole idea, Lee. Actually, I'm an extraterrestial and I've been sent from a distant galaxy to immobilize humanity by eventually sending the whole world into paroxysms of laughter, thus allowing the beings of my planet to take over earth and turn it into one huge earthworm farm, a gourmet item where I'm from somewhat akin to earthlings' voracious appetite for Kentucky Fried Chicken (if the KFC people are keeping tabs on me, I'll be expecting a little Christmas baksheesh).

John...I am pleased no-one has had the temerity to ask "what is a phillips head?" LOL I have been watching from afar (alas not from deep space tho) and have been enjoying your new cartoons as they pop up each day. Thanks for the smiles!

Dare I say it, Jean. For those who're wondering, it's a screw driver. Thanks for the comments!
