Cartoons, cartoons, cartoons.... John Crowther's Cartoon Odyssey

I think of it as The Fool's Journey. I've been asked who the "fool" is. It's me, but in the classical sense of the court jester. Only the fool was allowed to tell the king of his follies. All cartoons are available as prints or originals, framed or unframed, through my website or e-mail. Whodunnit?

The giant bookselling chains Borders, and Barnes and Noble, originally haughtily announced they were refusing to stock If I Did It, the hog swill co-authored by O.J. Simpson about Nicole's murder, but would only make it available over the Internet. That was before sales went through the roof. Now they've backtracked and decided the promise of huge profits outweighs the stench that will pervade their stores. So much for riding high horses along moral high roads. And by the way, talk about reading the fine print, check out the way the "if" on the title page has virtually disappeared inside the "I," making it all but impossibe to see, thus rendering the title, for all intents and purposes, I Did It. What a class act. Did I say class? I meant crass.

We have come so far away from the high moral ground we once had that I suspect few would recognize that road if they saw it in front of them.

We are no longer riding high horses, we are being ridden by jackasses.

No better example than the past actions of the extraordinarily intelligent woman who will most likely be the next President of the United States. In a brilliantly calculated move to keep herself planted dead center so as not to offend those in her party on either the right or left, she surrended an opportunity to be the first to dissent.

That's not moral courage; that's just playin' politics with the rest of the boys. Pitiful!

In these sorrowful times when politicians on the left and the right and in the middle are all beholden to those special interests who give them the money they need to run their campaigns, and when the media is even more corrupt and spineless as it fills 24/7 with mindless news and gossip, you are damned if you do and you are damned if you don't.
There's no more high ground just the gutter and everyone seems to be down there in it together.

You have no argument from me on that one, prof. Everyone's pleased to have you back aboard.

C'mon Norman! It's not as bad as all that!
I've been keeping myself occupied while housebound with the 24 hour flu which by the time it reached me morphed into Ebola, by reading ancient Roman political history.
At least our politicians don't kill off their rivals!
Even America in it's conception was full of political nastiness. Have you ever read about the Washington-Jefferson feuds? They got nastier than most politicians today.
I don't think much has changed in the past 3 thousand years. The only difference is that we know more about what's going on than we have in the past.

Quite right, Kate, though I don't think il prof was necessarily saying things are worse than in the past -- just business as usual. For political viciousness one need go no further back than the 1930's and the lead-up to America's entry into the "war in Europe." The isolationists vs. those who wanted us to get into it makes the current Iraq debates look like a debutante ball.

The good professor has something here... while everyone's tippy toeing round the minefield (mindful of whose funding them) things that should be said aren't getting said... and actions that should be taken are becoming stalled.

They just kill off those who have to listen to them 24/7 (((LOL))) Maybe it would be more effective if they did! (okay - kidding)

To get to the cartoon. While the trial was going on I thought Oj must be innocent because as a dsylexic he couldn't read the directions that came with the knife, grin,. re politics money has poisoned the system and the results were forecast in a book of the late 1950's The Politics of Mass society. roger

No argument there, Kate. I would like to think, however, that once upon a time in this democracy there was a moment when citizens entered the field of politics with higher and nobler ambitions than just getting elected. Often they had enough money themselves to be able to afford the luxary of integrity.

Most of the current crop can still afford the luxury of integrity, prof, but they've opted instead for the pleasures of power.

Good one, Roger. I understand that OJ had trouple finding a knife he could use. He's right-handed and he only had left-handed ones.

Oh, grrrrrroooooooaaaan, the OJ jokes. This was a case where the DA and staff became star struck. Never mind the victims or justice. That was a three ring circus, not a trial. So much on that subject.

Fist have to say that this is a terrific cartoon that made me laugh out loud.

Regarding Hillary: I had high hopes for her but she is selling out in my opinion when I had hoped that she would be strong, stand up for principles and show the world that a woman could be a good president of the USA. Not sure that she can get elected at this point. Think most people would like to vote for 'None of the above' in '08 on both sides.

John C., think it was the way she questioned Gen. P's report, it smacks too much of the rhetoric from the 70s to suit most people.

Il Professore, have missed your witty remarks. So glad that you are back and in good form. Hope that you stay around. How is the Cat With No Name these days?

Re Hilary... she's gotta be better than what's there now... surely?

No-one is going to be perfect... and who knows the pressures these pollies are under from all sides. She might feel the need to edge carefully toward the goal rather than go in boots n all (at least until she's elected) But hey... what would I know... I don't even get a vote... darn it!!! :-)

I couldn't agree more, Jean. I don't like everything about her, but she's smart, she's decent, she's tough, and she has a hell of lot of experience in government. There's got to be a reason the Republicans have been terrified of her, and have worked hard to shoot her down ever since Bill was elected. I've been saying for a long time now that she was going to be the next president. Even democrats were telling me I was crazy, not a chance, two years ago.
