They Ain't No Justice
I can never put out of my mind what for me, but not obviously for anyone else, was a key moment in the confirmation hearings of Clarence Thomas. He was called before the committee immediately after Prof. Anita Hill completed testifying about being sexually harrassed by him. The first question put to Thomas was, "did you hear any of Prof. Hill's testimony?" "No," he replied, "I refuse to listen to lies." Not one senator picked up on it. "The man's in line to be one of the nine most important judges in America," I thought, "with a job for life, and he's just characterized as lies testimony he hasn't even heard!" I don't know why he's complaining now. He beat the rap and became one of the Supremes.

OK, John C, we are going to come to blows for the first time in our friendship. (grin) Clarence Thomas is one of my heroes. This is a man who came from the poorest of poor and rose to be a Supreme Judge. A man of principle and honor. I watched the senate hearings and none of those clowns could measure up to Clarence Thomas. Anita Hill was and is a twit! Not even NOW believed her.
One of my friends talked about a speech by Anthony Scalia a VERY conservative justice. After the speech heoverheard this conversation. " how does your philosphy differ from that of Justice Thomas?"" I am a conservative and an intent of the framers freak, but I am not a nut." roger
Lee, neither Prof. Hill nor Thomas's humble origins figure in to my assessment of Thomas. And there are many "men of principle" who scare me, precisely because of their nutty principles [thanks, Roger]. Where's the honor?
I have read Clarence Thomas's judicial record and I do not listen to gossip not even from a friend. Bet Thomas More would have scared the H*** out of you, John C. (grin) Another of my heroes.
I gave Anita Hill the benefit of doubt but in the end did not believe much or even less of her testimony. She may have been sincere but having been on the receiving end of sexual harassment, her testimony sounded more like general histrionics to me. Does anyone realize that the spell check on this blog is American not English spelling? Just a small footnote.
