Cartoons, cartoons, cartoons.... John Crowther's Cartoon Odyssey

I think of it as The Fool's Journey. I've been asked who the "fool" is. It's me, but in the classical sense of the court jester. Only the fool was allowed to tell the king of his follies. All cartoons are available as prints or originals, framed or unframed, through my website or e-mail. Fantasy Sells, Especially When It's True

My brief report from the much hyped Comic-Con gathering in San Diego. Average age of the public: 15. Average mental level: 12. Fun, especially if you like day-glo-dyed spiked hair, not to mention ghouls and action figures in plastic costumes shoving marketing material at you. Parking a disaster. I had to park a mile away from the convention hall and pay $20. I hoofed the distance so as not to pay another $20 for a pedi-cab.

Thanks for the succinct summary of Comic-Con. I've never attended, but have been curious. You have satisfied my curiosity and saved me a trip.

John would love to hear more about the Comic-Con. Sounds fascinating! Do tell more please?

Dagwood was a blast from the dim dark distant past. I had forgotten all about him. Thanks for the revisit!

It is fascinating, Jean. However, Hollywood has almost entirely preempted it as a place to launch and hype their latest big-budget action spectacles. Only a tiny percentage of the expo is dedicated to the small independent presses, and most of them are publishing the action and fantasy magazines and books that appeal to geeky 15-year olds. What interests me, the serious graphic novel and non-fiction graphic books, are woefully under-represented. I enjoyed the small section of the vast main exhibition hall called the "Artists' Alley," where individual artists had tables where they could show off their wares. But even there most of them are creating action/fantasy comic book figures in the same recognizable style.

It's disappointing how often artists simply ape what others have done instead of extending themselves to think outside the box and come up with a new plan. People do of course... but for every one that takes that chance...there are a gazzillion followers that spring up in their wake. It makes sorting the wheat from the chaff very difficult indeed. But nonetheless... every picture tells a story I guess. LOL

John... I'll bet there's an opportunity there for an authentic cartoonist like you to blitz 'em next year with your pizzaz and style. How bout it?

LOL, Jean. Actually, yes, I'm seriously thinking of taking a table in the Artists' Alley at next year's "con."
