Getting a Head In His Work
My skeptical nature was vindicated this week when it was reported that the driver of a runaway Toyota in San Diego may not have been on the up and up. Authorities got suspicious when it turned out the heavily indebted guy is a serial insurance claim-maker. I knew he was bogus when he said his car had hit speeds of 94 miles an hour. 94? This bozo didn't have the wherewithall to pop the gear into neutral and turn off the engine, yet he did notice he was doing 94 as he screamed down the freeway? We live in weird times.

I wondered about that too John. Selecting neutral and gradually applying the handbrake would be the logical response even in a panic situation. He was on the freeway for gods sake... not as if he had to negotiate bends. Maybe people have been driving automatic transmission vehicles for way too long... they've lost touch with the engine and the gearbox that drives it. (Has got to be a metaphor for life in there somewhere LOL)
Love the cartoon. Noggin doctor... haven't heard that word in ages. So funny.
The man's car in San Diego did the same thing and he could not stop it. He was a trained highway patrolman, he and his whole family died that day when the car crash. Do not think he would have put his entire family in danger if something had not been wrong so have no idea if this present man was playing a dangerous game or not. Evidently Toyoda stated that putting the car in neutral and using the handbrake will not stop these car that are out of control. I am sure there are nuts out there who will try to sue and make bogus claims but how can anyone tell who is legitimate and who is trying to get something for nothing. Just glad that I have a good old Ford truck that seems to behave itself so far.
Do like this cartoon, nicely laid out and great comp. in it.
Lee... there's absolutely no way possible for a car to keep moving with the gearbox in neutral. In an auto it's simply a gear shift... in a manual step on the clutch. The engine will keep on revving but the car will [eventually] stop even without brakes. I thought the fatal accident was due to wrong size floor mats. There seems to be a lot of confusion right up to the top about what's happened/and still happening. A tragedy whichever way you look at it.
Love this cartoon John... so very cute.
It's the Ides of March here... I am watching my back. LOL
Oops... that went in the wrong place... now how did that happen?
Not to worry, Jean, I sometimes find myself going to the wrong place."
BTW, ironically this present case happened in San Diego as well. In that case you mention, Lee, something certainly went tragically wrong. And Toyota seems awfully disingenuous. They were saying it was the fault of car mats.... if so, why would putting the car in neutral not ameliorate the situation? It's a confusing situation. Yes, Lee, hang on to the truck, you can't go wrong.
