Cartoons, cartoons, cartoons.... John Crowther's Cartoon Odyssey

I think of it as The Fool's Journey. I've been asked who the "fool" is. It's me, but in the classical sense of the court jester. Only the fool was allowed to tell the king of his follies. All cartoons are available as prints or originals, framed or unframed, through my website or e-mail. Work Equals Play

I was asked yesterday by a friend if I wanted to go to a movie. "I can't," I answered, "I have to work." Almost immediately I burst out laughing. I wasn't working, I was drawing. From early childhood, ever since I knew what it was, one of my favorite things to do was draw, and if I wasn't drawing I was looking at pictures. Strange Anglo-Saxon word, work. It means such a plethora of things to a multitude of people. Those Anglo-Saxons were a stern, hardscrabble lot, dividing their time between back-breaking toil and getting totally ripped on mead. I enjoy writing, but that's work to me. Oddly enough, one of the reasons I drifted toward a career in writing eventually was that I felt I had to do something serious for a living. The old Judeo-Christian work ethic. Drawing and painting was way to much fun to be considered a.... well, a life's work. I'm glad I finally got all that sorted out.

Ah, a match made in heaven. Perfect wife for him, be it ex or no. Love this one, can hardly wait to see the next installment. He just might replace Jeremy in my affections. Well, probably not but he runs a close second!

Painting is the fun, the blank canvas is the work to my thinking. It looms over one like a monster waiting to pounce. One reason for my empathy for T.

Now that my computer is behaving for the moment, was able to view yesterday's cartoon for longer than one minute. Perfect line drawing, John C. Very impressive and helps to bring composition into understanding for me. Going to try to download it and put on the wall of my studio as an example. Way to go!

I think in the future I might want to be a little more careful about what I wish for.
But I do agree with what Lee said. This is obviously a match made in heaven. Why ever did they divorce?

Good question, Kate. As my mother used to say abut some couples, "Why ruin two houses?"

Hi John!
I have always had difficulty in referring to writing AND painting as "work", it has just been something that I 'do'. I can be "working on" a piece, but work as such, has been something that is where I leave my home to go to. However, now thru my circumstances (not being able to "go to work") my mind set is changing. Also, I cannot physically "work" as I used to anymore.So....the whole concept of "work" has changed (along with many other things!)
