Follow That Cliche
I wonder if anyone ever actually jumped into a cab and shouted "follow that car" to the driver. If I were to find myself in the unlikely situation that I had to utter those words, no matter how dire the circumstances my awareness of the absurdity of it would trump whatever emergency made it necessary and I'd burst out laughing. The screenwriter in me would lose precious time trying to come up with a less shopworn way to express the same sentiment. The driver would sit there tapping the steering wheel impatiently, and by the time I was able to sputter, still feeling foolish, "please proceed wherever that vehicle up ahead is directed," the car would have sped off and we'd be stuck at the next light.
Everybody race to your newstands and get the new Mad Magazine (August, issue#480). Then check out page 7. Yup, there we are.

Congratulations John! I will be watching out for that issue... however it may be a couple of weeks (months) on the ship before it gets here. Nevertheless... I WILL get my hands on a copy by hook or by crook.
Good heavens, John!
You are so nonchalant about something that is a really big deal!
Which cartoon is it? is there a place to see it online? I'll try and find a Mad magazine tomorrow, but I want to hear more, before then.
It is really amazing! Congratulations!
If you could bring yourself to say it, the response wold likely be ,"Get another cab." roger
Or perhaps, Roger, get a new editor.
Thanks, Kate, I appreciate that. It's not online, as far as I know, though it's a reworking of an old cartoon of mine.
Well, John, I've gone to extraordinary lengths to try and get Mad magazine. I went to every grocery store and drug store in my city looking for it. I was trying to avoid the 10 mile trek to the nearest bookstore because I made that journey 5 times yesterday retrieving forgotten items from my theatre to bring to the auditorium where we were building the set for the play we opened this morning.
Because I have this "instant gratification" thing going on, I ended up going to the bookstore today, anyway. And they didn't even have the August issue!
So why don't you take pity on me and post the Mad magazine cartoon?
I promise I'll buy it anyway. I've never known anyone who got a cartoon published, and I think it's really cool.
Now I understand from my niece, an actress in L.A., that they are in the process of publishing a Buffy the Vampire Slayer comic book, and the character she played on the show, Vi, will be a regular. It's supposed to look just like her. Still, that's not nearly as cool as having a comic published!
Your virtue and determination should be rewarded, Kate. E-mail me your address and I'll send you a copy. (I'm quite sure the new issue will be on newstands across the country very soon.)
You've started something now John... I hope you realise! LOL
Congratulation, John C. Monday I shall be haunting the newsstand. Jean, send me your address and I will buy two magazines and send you a copy. My email address now is lee.fineart@gmail.com. Now have a new ISP and hope that all my computer troubles are over!
Great cartoon and commentary as usual, John C.
That's so lovely of you Lee... thank you! I will scout around here first but if and when I draw a blank will let you know! Thanks again! So pleased you have your PC up and running again... we have really missed you...
Oops... I wonder what happened there? Suddenly I am annonymous... and I am NEVER annonymous.
Sorry Lee... it's me...
