Cartoons, cartoons, cartoons.... John Crowther's Cartoon Odyssey

I think of it as The Fool's Journey. I've been asked who the "fool" is. It's me, but in the classical sense of the court jester. Only the fool was allowed to tell the king of his follies. All cartoons are available as prints or originals, framed or unframed, through my website or e-mail. Memories Are Made of This

Look on the bright side, the kid will develop a skin thick as a Rhino. She'll wind up enduring every sling and barb Simon Cowell can throw at her and go on to become the American Idol of 2017. Now that I think about it, that's looking on the dark side. The bright side is she'll give up singing, become a research physician, and develop a cure for the common cold.

Surely American Idol will die a silent death before 2017, John C. Personally, I can not see what fascinates people about that show.

Love the one word cartoon, this is great!

I'm not sure one has to have seen AI, Roger, the entymological origin of "pitchy," which has gone on to become the contemporary way to damn a singer's tendency to hit slightly sour notes. I'm not one to defend a cartoon, but I'm fond of this one because aside from the "gag," which is admittedly a bit arcane, there's something bittersweet about the reactions of the child and the rest of her audience to grandad's put-down. I like the idea of a cartoon's having an emotional kick that isn't necessarily about humor. Though cartoon and funniness have become synonomous, the root of the world cartoon has nothing to do with laughter. In Italy the word for cartoon is vignette. I like it better.

I'd like to see one more frame where one of the group kicks the leg out from under grandpa's chair! Children live life at full volume. Critisism is acute... and sometimes even when nothing is said... the message gets inadvertently sent that nothing's good enough. What a shame she must grow thick skin...it's so ugly.
