Cartoons, cartoons, cartoons.... John Crowther's Cartoon Odyssey

I think of it as The Fool's Journey. I've been asked who the "fool" is. It's me, but in the classical sense of the court jester. Only the fool was allowed to tell the king of his follies. All cartoons are available as prints or originals, framed or unframed, through my website or e-mail. Global Harming III

I believe that if the earth is hurtling toward disaster in the form of global warming then no amount of activism is going to stop it. Few people are going to change their habits or give up things like gas guzzling cars, air conditioning, and bottled water to achieve an intangible goal like preventing a two degree rise in average world temperature over the next twenty years. Still, despite the occasional excesses on the part of activists, activism is necessary, whether we're talking about rights for minorities, better treatment of animals, ending the war, or anything else. Activism keeps an issue alive, so that everyone doesn't become totally complacent and descend into a media-fueled sloth where Lindsay Lohan's drug problem and David Beckham's ankle become the only things that matter.

Unfortunately most people are like sheep... if we're told it's good for us... we seem to have no hesitation in marching dutifully to the edge of the cliff. Activism is essential to keep the b--tards honest!

It's almost terrifying what comprehensive change can be effected over a relatively short period of time by the politically correct brainwashing of the masses.

A couple of examples...

The low fat/no fat lie. 30 years ago... the soybean/canola industry managed to convert the whole world from consuming healthy natural(but YES saturated)fats to polyunsaturates. Now we have the obesity crisis. How could it take 30 years to blow the whistle on this one?

The slip slop slap message (in Australia). How a nation was "encouraged" to slip on a shirt slop on sunscreen and slap on a hat. It really took off... and now 20 years on we have a population with chronic Vit.D. deficiencies and no marked decrease in the rate of deadly melanoma. So we smothered ourselves in carcenogenic chemicals for nothing as the evidence mounts that melanoma is not caused by sun exposure. urggh...

On a positive note... the Keep Australia Beautiful campaign has worked wonders... litter is virtually unheard of here... so at least there is one example of brain washing for the greater good.

And before long the do-gooders will have us changing our incandescent lightbulbs to "eco friendly" longlife fluorescents. The fact that they contain mercury which is persistent in the environment hasn't yet dawned on the powers that be... there is no safe way to dispose of them.

As is typical... we fix one problem and create an even bigger one. Some balance wouldn't go astray...*sigh*

Alights from the podium... and exits stage left... *wink* LOL

John C., this is a great cartoon. So typical. Love it and commentary as usual.
