Cartoons, cartoons, cartoons.... John Crowther's Cartoon Odyssey

I think of it as The Fool's Journey. I've been asked who the "fool" is. It's me, but in the classical sense of the court jester. Only the fool was allowed to tell the king of his follies. All cartoons are available as prints or originals, framed or unframed, through my website or e-mail. Today's Small Is Tomorrow's Big

Los Angeles, in its desire to attract more residents to its downtown area while shamelessly handing it over to developers, has passed new zoning regulations lowering the legal size of apartments in high rise buildings. It's now something like 800 square feet. That's not even big enough for a queen-size bed. A dinner party would be three people with tv trays and take out. You'd have to step into the corridor just to change your mind. It'd be like living in a Winnebago on top of a flagpole. I'm guessing they'll be the most expensive slums in the world. They'll have gazillionaires hanging out on the front stoop drinking latte grandes on a hot summer night just to get some air.

Can just see the gazillionaires now in their designer's 'baggers' clothes sitting on the doorstep, moaning about the lack of space to park their BMWs and feeling so chic and daring. Ah, that is real life they are living, raw and savage.

Great cartoon, John C.

Great cartoon John... your perspective is always spot on.

I went to see "Sicko" today... (only just released here) It moved me to tears of sadness and frustration for all those suffering at the hands of the corrupt and greedy.

I have no particular truck with developers, especially if they are creating only uppercrust units. But as one who lives in a 550 sq.ft. apartment, I have to differ with you over its liveability. I admit that when I first saw it, I thought (No, in fact, I said out loud) "Boy, this is just SO small!" That feeling maintained for about a month. Now, as a single person who doesn't particularly enjoy housework, I appreciate my home's modest size. And I do have a queen-size bed.

True, I would appreciate one more closet -- just a little space for storage of those things that come in handy every six months or so yet aren't decorative enough to do double duty as conversation pieces. 880 sq. ft. would do just fine, thank you very much.
