Economists tell us that growth is the engine that drives the economy. I'm no economist, but it seems to me there's something fundamentally flawed about that notion. It may work in the short run, but it puts the future of the world at risk. It's not just that eventually you run out of markets, but resources as well. Meanwhile, advertising is the engine that drives growth, and advertising is arguably the most egregiously wasteful of all human enterprises. It's output has no intrinsic value. Newspapers and magazines, television and radio, billboards, handouts, the Internet, junk mail, skywriting, they all innundate us constantly with messages that are not just infuriating, but also a ravenously costly aspect of the economy they're supposed to drive. Almost immediately it all vanishes, leaving no imprint on the culture other than kitschy and fragmentary evidence it once existed, like decades-old publications, throwaway coasters printed with the logo of beer that hasn't been around since the 1950's, and snatches of bygone slogans like a little dab'll do ya.

EXACTLY JOHN!!!I couldn't agree with you more. You know what I hate the most?- The incessantly irritating clamor of radio stations while waiting for a dentist or doctor's appointment. It's almost all advertising and I resent the intrusion of noise during the few moments I have to indulge in an otherwise captivating book! There seems to be no escape from this destructively material world, (outside the home, that is).
John, I love your commentary and I agree with you completely. It is interesting how popular the TV "Antique Roadshow" has become and how many people think that having all of those collectables is so important. After a year or so they end up in a box in the attic or basement. My next door neighbor was a "collector" and had shelves built all over her house. She died about a year ago and her children told me, "not to leave such a huge mess for my children to dispose of". But my only collection is of my art supplies and art books and some treasured paintings.

John... I reckon we are the product of a people placed on the planet without a book of "how to" instructions. How different things might have been if "Mother Earth for Dummies" had been around back then! ;-/
Good comment, Jean. Mary, not sure that I could calmly read a book
good , bad or indifferent in the dentist office. I doff my hat to you! Totally devout coward when it comes to dentists. (grin)
