What's That Smell? Must Be Election Year!
One would think this muck would be thrown by a rival candidate, or at least by some shadowy bottom feeders like the Swift Boat crowd, but no, this time it's come from no more august and prim outfit than the New York Times. According to their sources John McCain had a dalliance with a lobbyist a few years back and hustled through legislation on her clients' behalf. I don't doubt it's true. It's unlikely at this point the great grey Times would indulge in backstairs nattering if it weren't. What I want to know is, who cares? When I first glanced at the story on the Internet the second headline read: Was McCain Too Comfy With a Lobbyist? Initially I read it as, "with a lobster." Now that would be a story that mattered!

‘Tis a sad state of affairs that our grey old lady, the New York Times, has become as bad the Fox News Channel or The Star in rushing to print front-page non-news simply to sell more papers or advertising. What’s become of the great tradition of checking and double-checking every source for accuracy before rushing to the presses? Yes, I would like to believe that the editors of the NYT are on to something yet to be revealed, but my guess is that the only thing they’re on to is how to generate a fast buck to a reading public with a short attention span.
Could not agree more, il professore. Now if he had as John first thought had an affair with a lobster, it might have been exciting. Can't wait for the next dish of dirt on another of those running for office. Maybe Hillary or Obama had an affair with a camel that will come to light. Jeesh, going to give up reading papers and internet until Dec. 2008.
Two of my favorite characters, John C.
Lee, it’s not too far a stretch from having an affair with a lobster to imagining one with a mobster.
Tomorrow’s New York Post headline:
AIDE CLAIMS HILLARY SLEPT WITH GOTTI!
Anything to sell papers.
Sadly... it's no longer as simple as the desire to sell more papers. The media plays a much larger role than we could ever guess in the political process... who gets in and why. No longer impartially reporting the news... they have become major players (and hold great sway) in the political process. No doubt there's big money in possessing that sort of power.
