Haughty Cuisine
Awful story, but true, reported in the International Herald Tribune a number of years ago. A Swiss couple was travelling in Thailand with their little miniature poodle. As they settled down to order in their hotel dining room they told their waiter, who spoke imperfect English at best, they also wanted their dog to eat. Eager to please, he smiled, nodded, and led the dog away to the kitchen by the leash. After what seemd like an interminably long time the waiter returned, still grinning, with the fricaseed dog on a platter, ready to eat.

Most Thais are Buddhist - and would never harm a dog - let alone eat one. The report in the Int Herald Tribune sounds like a bit of a yarn to me.
Oh, I dunno, Jean [grin], they won't eat them, but would that stop them from serving dog to rich tourists? There's a California joke (wildly non-PC alert) that asks what you call a Thai with 3 dogs. Answer: a rancher.
I know the Chinese would but doubt if the Thais would. At home they don't eat much red meat... mostly chicken and seafood. Chinese traditionally eat (and serve) "anything that moves" including cockroach and snake. Urgh.
(Think I'll make a nice salad for lunch...grin)
Now that you mnetion it, Jean, and I think about it, it may have happened in Hong Kong (when still under Brit rule).
I'm with you, a little endive with blue cheese dressing for din tonight (but no tomato, there's a salmonella scare.... food is lethal nowadays).
[grin]
Hey, watch that 'under Brit rule'. Glad I ate dinner before reading these comments. Ugh (grin). Absolutely do not believe that article. Off to take an antacid pill.
