Cartoons, cartoons, cartoons.... John Crowther's Cartoon Odyssey

I think of it as The Fool's Journey. I've been asked who the "fool" is. It's me, but in the classical sense of the court jester. Only the fool was allowed to tell the king of his follies. All cartoons are available as prints or originals, framed or unframed, through my website or e-mail. L'Chaim

The average elephant lives longer than the average human being, which leads some people to believe that the secret to longevity lies in working for peanuts. Others, on the other hand, will tell you the secret is having a thick skin. A long life, however, is a gift we don't get to keep. Everybody wants to live a long time, but nobody wants to get old.

As I have only been a subscriber to the blog for perhaps over a year I may be wrong in saying that this may be the first time a little figure who gives us information without which the cartoon might not make sense has appeared. Those of you who have been here since the inauguration may have seen him/her before. Whatever the history, I want to applaud the artist for the device. If only that little person could be with us always as we are obliged to make life’s decisions: go left or go right; leave her now or never. I rarely look down at my feet anymore, and, as I am chronically myopic, I have noticed that as I grow older I am always at risk of tripping. The blind leading the blind.

He usually rides on my right shoulder, prof, and offers mostly unhelpful directions. Or perhaps the problem is that I too frequently ignore his guidance and he turns out to have been right. I think perhaps this is the third time he's appeared in a cartoon.

Love this cartoon. It is New Yorker material for sure!

Forgot to click the publish button last night after looking at it. Old age setting in.
