My nephew, whose home in La Crescenta is nestled between two areas under mandatory evacuation Saturday, told me at least one of the two was unnecessary. "Mandatory" is a term like "life sentence." It isn't what it sounds like. Lifers get paroled all the time, and mandatory means "stay if you want, but it's at your own risk." People routinely use "sort of" and "kind of," so why not "sort of mandatory evacuation?"

Mandatory or not... people should just get out. Look what happened here back in January. The fires were catastrophic. People given the option to stay in their homes... died.
Hope your nephew and his family remain safe and sound John and that an end to the fires is in sight.
So far so good, Jean, and firefighters are guardedly optimistic while declaring that things could easily turn bad again depending on the weather. Meanwhile, from where I live there was a strange beauty as towering white cumulus clouds pushed upward by the hot air rose above the yellowish-grey smoke that hung over the distant canyons and obscured the mountaintops.
