Cartoons, cartoons, cartoons.... John Crowther's Cartoon Odyssey

I think of it as The Fool's Journey. I've been asked who the "fool" is. It's me, but in the classical sense of the court jester. Only the fool was allowed to tell the king of his follies. All cartoons are available as prints or originals, framed or unframed, through my website or e-mail. There Oughta Be a Law

I for one am sick of the practically daily polls showing the shifting sands of the President's "approval" rating. Reported by the media increasingly frantic about their own approval ratings, they do nothing but reflect the skewed, strident, arrogant news reporting of, yes, that's right, the media.

A president who governs based on daily polls is akin to a CEO who manages the company to meet analyst's quarterly expectations. Neither is taking a long-term view, or a leadership position.

Approval ratings are a manufacture of the media circus as you so rightly point out John. I doubt they would make a dent on the President's leadership style but they can unnecessarily (and adversely) affect public opinion. Love the cartoon. Touche. LOL

Doubt that anyone pays attention to the polls, John C. except the media. Hopefully people will base their votes in 2010 on the economy, war and whether or not the dollar has lost all value. I, for one, do not approve of all the debt that our government is spending. Think most of it is wrong. I am an independent who voted with reluctance for Obama who I feel has not really brought about change. Said all along that Hillary would be a better choice but no one in Washington asked my opinion. (grin)

I hear you, Lee, and can empathize with your feelings, but I think the least we can do is give Obama time. Look what he's up against. There are two war zones (Iraq and Afghanistan), the rogue nation Pakistan, widespread poverty and a collapsing education system, an economic meltdown the bankers want to exploit for their own gain, and hundreds of thousands of Americans shut out of the health care system (which makes the insurance companies and pharmaceutical giants rich). This cant be turned around overnight, or even in a month or five. It will take years. That's my whole point about polls. People judge on a day by day basis, and the media simply don't permit any long-range comprehension of the depth and breadth of the challenges. As for Hillary, she has yet to impress me as Sec'y of State, but she too deserves time given the enormity of the problems.

P.S. You'll notice that my sketch of Hillary is on my homepage.

I wanted Hillary too Lee... but I live without a say on a different planet in another galaxy... so I had an even lesser chance of being heard! Not that it matters in the slightest... (((chuckles)))

I think John is quite right though... that neither Obama nor Clinton has had an ice cube's hope in hell of finding solutions to the burgeoning wave of fiscal complications confronting leaders of all countries through the global economic crisis. Sometimes I even feel sorry for KRudd... but that's only sometimes! (((LOL)))

I suspect it's less a matter of finding "solutions" than ultimately exerting a significant influence on the myriad of conflicting interests. It's the old "vision" thing. What's desperately needed is a paradigm shift in the way government does its business, business relates to people, and people make demands on government. Perhaps a president can do little more than change the water in the pool.

Touble is the water meter's running... and it costs mega bucks to replace the chemicals. Not to mention the big fat guy that keeps jumping in the deep end displacing the water that's being replaced. Ahhh... if life is a beach... then politics is definitely a swimming pool! LOL Great analogy John... paints the picture perfectly!

And you're absolutely right, of course, Jean, that time is getting short.

The swimming pool analogy is good, but it smells more like a cesspool.
