Cartoons, cartoons, cartoons.... John Crowther's Cartoon Odyssey

I think of it as The Fool's Journey. I've been asked who the "fool" is. It's me, but in the classical sense of the court jester. Only the fool was allowed to tell the king of his follies. All cartoons are available as prints or originals, framed or unframed, through my website or e-mail. May the Best Loser Win

One can only wish that some of the mental energy being poured into the nefarious scheming and plotting in the presidential campaign was being directed toward some real problem solving, like ending the war in Iraq and reversing the downward plunge of the economy. Here's one for the books. The South Carolina Republican Committee is releasing a low blow TV ad aimed at Sen. Obama. John McCain climbs on his high horse, takes for the high road, and "asks" the committee to withdraw it. The committee refuses. So now the ad gets run not just as a paid spot locally, but repeatedly on every news program in the country. The message gets out, for free. Now if only they could do something about education or health.

Alas, although I admire both candidates for the job, Hillary winning PA with an almost 10% advantage over Obama will only lengthen the circus and diminish his chances of ever convincing the super-delegates that he is the best candidate for the job. As Norah Ephron pointed out in a recent article in the Huffington Post blog, Hillary’s victory has proven that many a blue color white man who shifted long-time allegiance from the Democrat Party to Reagan Republicanism would much rather hate but vote for a white woman than to see a black man or McCain in office. As these so-called independent voters will undoubtedly decide the election, Obama’s chances of swaying powerful delegates are not so hot.

Just to play Satan's lawyer, prof, you may well be right, but one can't discount the vote of many blue collar independents who are not "haters," and to whom HRC presumably speaks. If there's one generalization that's apt, it's that we can't generalize.

Il professore, never did I ever think that I would be on the opposite side of you but Obama in my opinion has been reacting like a whiny baby. Boo,hoo, hoo, the last debate was too hard on him. Hillary has shown herself to be a tough and determined candidate. It has nothing to do with Obama being black but rather a whiner when the going gets tough. I am an independent voter and can tell you that I now believe Hillary is a much better candidate. She has proven herself under fire. Plus she does not have the Rev. Wright, etc. as baggage . I never liked Bill Clinton but I do admire Hillary. In the beginning, I was for Obama but now I see him in a different light. If he does not get the nomination, there will be much yelling and gnashing of teeth stating it is because he is black. That really turns me off.

Dear Satan’s Lawyer, I’m not saying that all blue-collar workers are haters. Far from it. And you are right in pointing out that those who are truly independent in thought and action may very well sway the election through intelligent choice. On the other hand, there also seems to be a great deal of animosity out there impossible to fully count in the mix. Only time and CNN will tell.
